Texts: 2 Peter 2:3a “And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you:…..”
1 Timothy 6:10 “For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”
Introduction: Do not get me wrong. I love Christmas Time and celebrating the Birthday of Jesus. I love exchanging gifts and receiving gifts, who doesn’t? Jesus is great merchandise, many businesses go from red to black from Christmas sales. Many men have sold Jesus and have become wealthy corporations.
Money: It is a gigantic statement to say that the love of money is the root of all evil. The government seems to love attacking Christians until it comes to all the taxes that they receive from Christmas sales. Money seems to bring peace and joy (tolerance), for a while during Christmas time.
Gifts: I think Christmas gifts are about children. I loved watching the excitement and joy my sons showed during Christmas Time. The Wise Men brought gifts to Jesus as a child, not to Mary and Joseph. When we make Christmas about gifts and sales; we lose the true meaning of Christmas.
Stress: Because of the focus on gifts instead of Christ; we pierce ourselves through with many sorrows. Suicides increase, bank robberies increase, and now they steal your mailed presents off of your front porch. They even steal the Baby Jesus out of the nativity scene.
Conclusion: Who is responsible for this distorted view of Christmas? Who raised up this present generation? Who taught them their values and morals? Who turned their backs on Jesus’ gift and walked out into the world forsaking the Church? I can remember when we left our doors and windows open when we went to Church. What has changed? God hasn’t changed. Jesus message of salvation and forgiveness hasn’t changed. God’s Word hasn’t changed. Who changed?
Jeremiah 6:16 “Thus saith the Lord, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.”
